GLASS-BLOWER
IN THE « QUATRE-VENTS »
How can one think of that a ball of « calcin »
(miscellany of sand and lead) in fusion can become a magnificent crystal
vase ? To understand this, one must visit the “Cristallerie des Quatre
Vents” in Saulcet to admire the skills of the glass-blower Hilario
Trindade, producing decanters, stairballs, whisky glasses,
paper-holders… Real magic than this art to “pick” with a long hollow
stick the pasta in fusion, blow in the stick to obtain a ball (the “poste”)
and round it off in the maul (instrument in hollow wood), then in a
newspaper, work on it on a wooden plank and shape the plan by
experienced rotating and balancing movements. These are only the first
steps for the manufacturing of glass (or crystal, more diaphanous and
heavier due to the lead). It is a hundred times more interesting to look
at than to read, especially when, in the workplace, Sylvie Trindade,
comments from A to Z her husband’s goldsmith gestures (only groups on
request). Hilario Trindade, just like his father, Vittorino, who
transmitted his knowledge, does not fear to work in front of the public.
Even better, he started in 2001 to exercise on stained-glass windows and
organizes now successfully, in low season, trainings « « vitrail
traditionnel » (8 hours/day for 5 days !).

COPPERWARE, METAL POTTERY
From ambulance driver to copperware craftsman (artisan manufacturing
tools and objects in copper), there is huge gap that, François Lamy, in
Voussac, crossed easily. Living since the years 70 in the “Bourbonnais”,
he meets, when he was 25, a fervent who shows him the ropes of this
craft. That’s why he took a sabbatical year and learns in the workplace
of this “master”.
A few years later, thanks to background information,
he discovers that copperware trade is one of the decorative art streams
of which the millennium know-how, nevertheless long time forgotten, was relaunched and renewed at the beginning of the XXth century. After
having for a long time tasted this metal pottery, he now mixes bronze,
steel and copper in his modern sculptures designed for home and
exterior. He became “metal-worker organizer”, so he says, (he holds a
diploma of State presenter) and often intervenes in schools or during
craft trades. He privileges the “magic of the gesture” rather than the
object in itself, considered “almost as an accessory” and presents
himself as a free artist working mostly on demand, as passes time. He
can also be a “public man”, (he participates at the “Centre des metiers
d’art de Souvigny) and his forge is open for people wanting to learn
steel manufacturing.
