VARIED LANDS OF FORTERRE

The river Allier, on the east, runs alongside of the Val de Sioule. Beyond, Varennes, reputated city in the ancient time (a Roman way served it). Central economic point, Varennes is indeed set at industrial crossroads of the val de Sioule. On the cultural heritage side, this plain of val d'Allier offers many Gallo-Roman sites, castles, churches, chapels, crosses of XIIth and XIXth centuries and also washing-places, ponds and rambling paths. the karting track of Villemouze, where numerous French and European championships take place, testifies the dynamism of sports in this area. Close to Varennes, starts the Forterre. Fertile farming area, extending over the little village of Boucé with its rich black lands, this old lake was nevertheless, till the middle of the XIXth century, a marsh. Thanks to Mr. Rambourg, his stewards (Brothers Vaulx) and also his farmers who dried up, drained and cleaned up this area, allowing the domestication of this resisting plain. More than thousand hectare of excellent ground saw the light, permitting to numerous farms to cultivate cereal. We can also find meadows where a special cattle beef was introduced : The Charolais; Nowadays, a yearly appointment for these cattle-breeders, 15 days after Easter, the well known agricultural-show and exposition of Varennes, draw year after year more and more visitors.
