THE
CULTURES OF THE WORLD MEET IN GANNAT
Impressed by the festival of Confolens (Charente), the
members and the founder, Jean Roche, of the Art and Popular traditions
group decided, in 1973, to create in the city an international big
get-together of
Folklore : “The
Festival” was born !
Presently, the
festival “L es Cultures du Monde” is one of the three most important
get-togethers of world cultures in France. 20.000 visitors frequent, mid
July, the site installed on the market square. A figure that climbs to
40.000 with the animations in the surrounding villages and the
participating towns.
The original
ambition, reveal an authentic expression – no matter the origin –
survived and is undiminished by the hard labour of more than 500
voluntaries, working during eight to ten months before the event in
order to achieve a big feast. In the backwash of the festival (before
and after) developed practical trainings of dance, music, forums,
movies, meeting places and a village. This event led to the building of
the “Maison des cultures et traditions” and a youth hostel, open the
year round, where during the festival, one can dance till late in the
night.
