VALIGNAT
REMINISCES THE OLD CRAFTS
Considered by the author Emile Mâle as « the
point of France where the south ends and the north begins », Valignat is
a very small village (57inhabitants) with numerous roofs covered with
round tiles (typical provençal style) where the charm of the past are
really present . he little place has a rich patrimony – Gallo-Roman
road, roman church (XIth), castle (XVIIIth), Celtic dolmen (perched on a
hill offering a remarkable point of view), ancient wells, medieval
environment -, this « little Charroux » specialized in development of
past crafts. In the first place with its amazing éco-agrarian museum, an
authentic academy of the rural live in the canton in the XIXth.
Furthermore, since 1999, with the Feast of the old crafts and arts,
which at once attracted hundreds amateurs.
On the third Sunday of July,
many craftmen work on the spot in order to allow the visitor to revive
the tradition of their activities.
An anthology of
secular know-how (wool and silk weaving, wood sculpture, laceworks,
embroidery, tapestry, ornament of china, mosaic, basketry, marquetry,
bakery… and don’t forget the smith who learns the children to
manufacture steel tools. Picturesque journey ending with a meal… country
cooking of course !
